Thank you, thank you to all our wonderful volunteers! The Summer Adventures pilot free lunch program has now concluded, and we are currently evaluating its successes and challenges.

The free lunch service GardenShare provided would have been impossible without the help of OVER 50 generous volunteers who prepared and served the lunches, spending OVER 350 HOURS of their summer crafting delicious local meals or serving seconds and thirds of zucchini muffins and blueberry sorbet!

The Summer Adventures program is a collaborative effort between GardenShare, Canton Recreation Department. GardenShare provides free lunches using an all-volunteer workforce! Summer Adventures is pilot program that offers a free structured summer recreation program for kids ages 6-12. The 2018 program took place in Taylor Park, from 9:00am to 3:00pm for six weeks with free busing and free lunch. The program offered a wide variety of activities centering around healthy food, minds, family, environment, river, and economy.

Activities and lunch took place at Canton’s Taylor Park (Taylor Park Rd, Canton, NY 13617). Volunteer prep shifts took place at Harvest Kitchen, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County. The 2018 pilot program ran Monday - Friday from 9:00am-3:00pm for six weeks from July 2 - August 10th.

This program falls within GardenShare’s mission, which is to solve the problem of hunger in St. Lawrence County. In Canton schools, about 42% of children are receiving free or reduced school meals and about 120 students are sent home with backpacks of food for the weekends through the Golden BearPack Program. However, there are no subsidized summer meals in Canton. This program fills that gap by providing Canton youth with superivison and fun programming along with a healthy meal.

Thank you to our sponsors - Canton’s Recreation Department, private donors, Stewart’s Holiday Match, and the People Project - who makes this program possible!
