Volunteer with GardenShare

I volunteer for GardenShare because I believe that good foodand access to it...is at the core of so much that is important in the lives of individuals, communities and ecosystems.  GardenShare is important to me because we endeavor to build community, promote small and sustainable efforts, and also because I love to eat good food and want to share that joy with others.  - Margaret Harloe

Would you like to give some time to support GardenShare's mission of solving hunger?

Here are some current opportunities:

Farmers Market / SNAP Outreach Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as foodstamps) outreach volunteers needed to promote the awareness and use of SNAP/EBT benefits at local Farmer's Markets in St. Lawrence County on an individual basis and in group environments.  Volunteers will also provide information, and share materials and resources to engage and educate people while helping them learn and feel comfortable about the market environment.

Farmers Market Manager Assistant - GardenShare is looking for volunteers to be on call to support the farmers markets throughout the county.  The job is to be at the market manager's table to answer questions, provide information about the market and GardenShare, and to process SNAP, debit, and credit card transactions.  GardenShare will provide training and then the Market Managers will call when they need someone to fill in for a whole or partial market day.

Annual Dinner Committee - This event is planned for June 14, 2016 at Jake's on the Water in Hannawa Falls.  One subcommittee will handle invitations and promotion and another will take care of the auction at the event, including soliciting the auction donations and set-up/management of the auction.  This committee will start work in January 2016 with monthly meetings until May, when we  may need two final pre-event meetings.  Committee members wll be expected to purchase their own ticket and attend the event, along with attending a wrap-up meeting afterwards.

Mailing TeamSeveral times a year, GardenShare has newsletter or other bulk mailings to go out. A volunteer team folds, stuffs, labels, etc. these mailings. This is more fun than it sounds for you get to socialize around the table with a great group of people.  Join our "on call" list and we'll get in touch when we have a project!

Office help - No regular schedule, but be on call for help with projects as needed.

Fight Hunger 5K - This fun run / walk-athon will be held in September or October to raise money to support GardenShare's work.  Committee is assembling now to get the planning started.

Outreach and Education Committee The GardenShare Outreach and Education Committee works year-round to educate the community aboutn issues around hunger and local food / agriculture. This includes many events where GardenShare has a presence, like festivals, fairs, and other public events as well as events GardenShare organizes.  Committee members might staff a table at a wellness fair, help plan and implement a themed movie night, create a float for the Dairy Princess Parade, speak at a club or religious congregation, or come up with new ways to spread the word about GardenShare.  The Committee meets monthly on the first Tuesday in the evening. Events happen at various times and places.

Development Committee The Fund Development Committee oversees and assists with all of GardenShare's fundraising efforts, including major donors, direct mail, grants, and events.

Cabin Fever Trivia Night Committee - We will be looking for a team of volunteers to put this event together for February of 2017.  Planning will begin in November!
