2009 Local Food Guide
GardenShare’s annual Local Food Guide lists farmers’ markets, farm stands, U-pick farms, organic growers, orchards, CSA farms, and grocers in St. Lawrence County, New York, where shoppers can buy locally grown vegetables, fruits, cheese, honey, maple products, meat, and eggs. View a list of this year's Sponsors.
Email info@gardenshare.org to request a free paper copy.
The farms listed in this guide have assured us that they sell food they have raised themselves or food they have produced themselves using largely local ingredients. Beyond this simple honor system, GardenShare does not certify locally grown food or farming practices. In addition to their own food, these farms may also sell food that is not locally grown or produced. Feel free to ask the farmer, Did you grow this yourself?
Terms
Certified Organic: Certified organic farms have met USDA standards for organic food production, as verified by an accredited agency such as the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY). Other farms may also follow organic practices but have chosen not to undergo the certification process. For example, signers of the NOFA-NY Farmer's Pledge commit themselves to ecologically sound farming and to socially responsible labor and local marketing practices. Ask the farmer about his or her farming practices.
CSA: Some farms offer a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) option. Consumers can purchase a share of the farm's harvest at the beginning of the growing season and then pick up a box of freshly harvested produce (or meat, honey, maple syrup, eggs) each week throughout the season.
